When you receive a total disability rating of 70 percent or more for a service-connected medical condition, you may become eligible for a certain level of financial compensation from the VA, plus various additional benefits and services provided through the VA and state and local government agencies.

Eligibility for Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU)
A 70 percent VA disability rating may also make a veteran eligible for total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU), which can grant veterans benefits and services at the 100 percent disability rating. A veteran can qualify for TDIU if they cannot hold substantial gainful employment due to a service-connected disability and they either have one service-connected disability with a disability rating of 60 percent or higher or two or more service-connected disabilities with at least one rated at 40 percent or more and a combined rating of 70 percent or more.
Although TDIU does not change a veteran’s disability rating, it provides them access to the benefits and services available to veterans with 100 percent disability ratings, including monthly benefits at the 100 percent disability rating and additional benefits or services provided to totally disabled veterans.
Access to Additional VA Benefits and Services
A 70 percent disability rating or TDIU status can provide access to additional benefits and services. Veterans with a disability rating of 70 percent or more may qualify for free healthcare through the VA in priority group 1, which places them at the highest priority for VA healthcare services, such as preventative care, dental care, prescriptions, and hospitalization. Veterans’ dependents may also become eligible for Chapter 35 educational benefits, which provide up to 45 months of assistance with post-secondary education, vocational training, or other approved academic programs. Veterans may also qualify for housing assistance that helps with the cost of purchasing, building, or modifying a residence to suit their disabilities.
Additional benefits may include:
- Access to military commissaries and exchanges
- Financial assistance with funeral/burial expenses
- Access to VA-sponsored life insurance with waived premiums
- Free tax preparation services

State and Local Benefits
States and municipalities may extend other benefits to veterans with VA disability ratings of 70 percent or more, such as:
- Property tax exemptions
- Exemption from license or excise taxes, registration fees, or public parking permits for vehicles
- Financial assistance for dependents pursuing education at public colleges or universities
